parabens
Ingredient names: Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben,  butylparaben and isobutylparaben

The most widely used preservative in skincare and beauty products and also used as an antibacterial agent (fight bacteria)  and a fragrance ingredient.  Health risks include possibly increasing the risk of cancer; parabens have been found in breast tumours. Hormone, fertility, pregnancy, brain and nervous system effects and issues have also been linked.

formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Ingredient names: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15 and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate37

Used in cosmetics, skincare and personal care products as antimicrobial (an agent that kills microorganisms or inhibits their growth) preservatives, these ingredients slowly and continuously release small amounts of formaldehyde, which has toxic effects on the immune and cardiovascular systems, blood, and skin.

bha/ bht
Ingredient names: Butylated hydroxyanisole, Butylated hydroxtoluene

Used in cosmetics, skincare and personal care products as an antioxidant (a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules) and fragrance ingredient, they are a known human immune system toxicant which may cause cancer, probable skin toxicants and they are harmful to fish and other wildlife.

dbp
Ingredient name: Dibutyl phthalate

Used mainly in nail products as a solvent and a plasticiser (softener) that prevents nail polishes from becoming brittle.  It is also found in many cosmetics and personal care products as a fragrance ingredient.  It is a probably immune system and skin toxicant which may cause cancer.  Hormone, fertility, pregnancy, brain and nervous system effects and issues have also been linked. Harmful to fish and other wildlife.

dea
Ingredient names: Cocamide diethanolamine, Lauramide diethanolamine

These are used as surfactants (compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid). Surfactants may act as foam boosters and emulsifying agents.  Also used as PH adjusters, skin softeners and humectants (substances used to keep things moist).  They are found in hair care and hair dyes, body and hand washes, suncreams and moisturising foundations.  These ingredients can form carcinogenic (cancer inducing) nitrosamine compounds if mixed with nitrosating agents.  Skin and immune system toxicants and irritants.  Studies have shown that they may trigger asthma and can cause endocrine disruption and brain and nervous system issues.

coal tar dyes
Ingredient names: Look for P-Phenyl-enediamine in hair dyes and colours identified as “C.I.” followed by five digits

Coal tar is a mixture of many chemicals, derived from petroleum, which have a potential to cause cancer and can be contaminated with heavy metals toxic to the brain.

siloxanes
Ingredient names: Cyclotetrasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane and Cyclomethicone

Silicone-based compounds are used extensively in moisturisers and facial treatments to soften, smooth and moisten. They make hair products dry more quickly and deodorant creams slide on more easily. They are suspected endocrine disrupters and reproductive toxicants (cyclotetrasiloxane) which are also harmful to fish and other wildlife.

sls/sles
Ingredient names: Sodium lauryl sulfate,  Sodium laureth sulfate

Used to enhance foaming action in many cosmetics, personal and hair care products such as shampoo, cleansers and bubble baths. SLES can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane which may cause cancer and SLS may damage the liver.  They are also skin irritants which are rapidly absorbed into the heart, liver, brain and eyes (can cause long term effects; linked to cataracts in adults and inhibiting proper development of children’s eyes). Also harmful to fish and other wildlife.

peg compounds
Ingredient name: Polyethylene glycol

Used an emulsifier and emollient in hair care such as conditioners, personal care and cosmetics like deodorants and moisturisers. But it can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane which may cause cancer.

parfum
Ingredient names: Parfum, perfume, fragrance

A whole host of ingredients (over 3000) can be hidden in this one word.  Used in many cosmetic products as a smell enhancer, these cocktails of synthetic fragrance chemicals  can be irritating for sensitive skin, can trigger allergies and asthma and some are linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. Also, some are harmful to fish and other wildlife.

petrolatum
Ingredient names: Mineral Oil, Petroleum Jelly, Paraffinum Liquidium, Liquid Paraffin

Used in a wide range of products including hair products to add shine, moisturisers to soften the skin, lip balms/ lip sticks as a moisture barrier.  Coming from crude oil, petrolatum is at risk of being contaminated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are which are know carcinogens found in crude oil and its by-products.  Mineral oil is a petroleum by-product and is used in lots of products because it’s cheap.  Although it may have short term benefits on your skin, test have shown it to clog pores, dry out skin and disrupt skin function.
